Hartlepool College BtG Students Become Stewards for “Take That” – Thanks to Sunderland FC

Students and staff at Hartlepool College have been studying very successfully on the Bridging the Gap programme which has developed very effectively within the college.

Negotiations with premiership football team Sunderland for work experience opportunities at the Stadium of Light resulted in staff members and 63 students submitting applications for employment as stewards at concerts by leading groups “Take That” and “Kings of Leon”, at the Stadium of Light, this May and June.

This proved an excellent opportunity to develop a beneficial partnership with Sunderland, and provided invaluable experience prior to London 2012, and for future careers in the events industry.

Following a comprehensive training session before the Stadium of Light concerts, students and staff worked nightly at the “Take That Progress Tour Live” – the start of a UK and Europe wide tour. Each of the sell-out concerts attracted an audience of 55,000 and provided students with a variety of special challenges.

Feedback from the stadium staff was exceptionally positive; everyone involved was judged a credit to themselves, the college and Sunderland FC. All enjoyed the experience and are now anticipating many more challenging events during the build up to 2012.

Students who applied are being offered interviews for possible employment for all home matches in the new premiership season commencing August 2011, plus other events at the Stadium of Light.

The partnership with Sunderland has focused Hartlepool students on the Olympics and provided an invaluable insight to the opportunities of a career in the events industry, plus significant understanding of dealing first hand with large audiences in an arena.

Stewarding at The Climate Run

Fourteen other Sport and Public Services students also ran the course.

The 5km event – held simultaneously in Germany – was aimed at raising the awareness among young people of climate change and was the first of its kind held in the
